Estou vivo e escrevo sol
no vazio fresco
é porque aboli todas as mentiras
a coincidência perfeita
no acto de escrever e sol
A vertigem única da verdade em riste
a nulidade de todas as próximas paragens
navego para o cimo
tombo na claridade simples
e os objectos atiram suas faces
e na minha língua o sol trepida
Melhor que beber vinho é mais claro
ser no olhar o próprio olhar
a maraviha é este espaço aberto
a rua
um grito
a grande toalha do silêncio verde

PRETENSIONES ALEJADAS DE LA MEDIOCRIDAD

20-07-2019
WALDEN, ECONOMÍA
VERSOS COMPLEMENTARIOS
LAS PRETENSIONES DE LA MEDIOCRIDAD

Tú presumes demasiado, pobre y necesitado comparsa
Para reclamar un puesto en el firmamento
Porque tu cabaña humilde o tu refugio
Nutre alguna virtud perezosa o pedante
Falsamente exaltada fortaleza pasiva
Actos valientes, generosos, grandeza real,
Aquiles, Teseo.
Vuelve a tu detestada celda,

Notes on the "Complemental Verse"
by René Pinet (Bahia, Mexico)

"To some academicians, this must have seemed Emile all over again.

It was not, of course. At least, it was not Thoreau's intention, as was Rousseau's. Walden was not even Thoreau's life-style when it was published ("I lived there two years and two months. At present I am a sojourner in civilized life again"). As metaphorical as it is ("labor enough to subdue and cultivate a few cubic feet of flesh"), as lacking in compromise as it seems (Thoreau was much compromised in the fight against slavery), much of the discussion in chapter one is in real economic terms.

I think the inclusion of "The pretensions of poverty" serves a double purpose: first, it refuses debate by letting the blow pass, but acknowledging it -- an act, I think, of great intellectual honesty. Second -- and I think in this he was much less successful -- by warning its readers not to become the target Carew aims at, and the first paragraph caricatures.

I think the real lesson Thoreau intended is not his life-style; not even his two-year prescription for cure. It is his attitude. And of this, as the Editors of Time remind us, Walt Whitman's portrait is the best: "Thoreau's lawlessness -- his dissent -- his going his own absolute road let hell blaze all it chooses". This, I think, has been a distinguishing mark of the American character, ever present in its folklore, its politics, its classical and popular art, even in what Americans admire of other cultures -- just watch, if not, Hallmark's production of Merlin."

JAN KOUM Y BRIAN ACTON (WALDEN ECONOMY)

2009

( Alessandro Baricco, The Game)

I read in the Gulistan, or Flower Garden, of Sheik Sadi ofShiraz, that "they asked a wise man, saying: Of the many celebrated trees which the Most High God has created lofty and umbrageous, they call none azad, or free, excepting the cypress, which bears no fruit; what mystery is there in this? He replied, Each has its appropriate produce, and appointed season, during the continuance of which it is fresh and blooming, and during their absence dry and withered; to neither of which states is the cypress exposed, being always flourishing; and of this nature are the azads, or religious independents. -- Fix not thy heart on that which is transitory; forthe Dijlah, or Tigris, will continue to flow through Bagdad after the race of caliphs is extinct: if thy hand has plenty, be liberal as the date tree; but if it affords nothing to give away, be an azad, or free man, like the cypress."
VERSOS COMPLEMENTARIOS

LAS ASPIRACIONES DE LA POBREZA

 (…) Pero nosotros avanzamos

Solo las virtudes que tienen excesos,

 Actos valientes, generosos, grandeza real,

Aquiles, Teseo.

 Vuelve a tu detestada celda,

"There is no such thing as virtue (society)" (Thatcher)

THE TRUTH OF WINNERS AND LOSERS

The awarding of “winner” or “loser” status in the social, legal and political “game” is not outside it. There is no impartial judge nor invisible hand producing and delivering the result. It is a social compact.

The true fight of the game was not usually in the forefront but behind the scenes and winner’s power. This was ever a common place in literature-the commonest one I feel-. Literature was the truth of power elucidated by some individuals not playing power’s game. Being able to refrain from power was a prerequisite of truth.

That was also the reason why any loser could defend truth’s independence and in so doing win –at least- the real truth of any fight.

Today literature and “losers” are being denied their previous status and confined to nowhere in the social realm. Preserving power requires today not only to produce “losers” but to destroy any narrative from them and sell something different instead. Truth’s dead is the real victory of “winners” in our days.

It is no mere coincidence that Thoreau points to truth in Walden conclusion in this way:

“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth. I sat at a table where were rich food and wine in abundance, and obsequious attendance, but sincerity and truth were not; and I went away hungry from the inhospitable board. The hospitality was as cold as the ices. I thought that there was no need of ice to freeze them. They talked to me of the age of the wine and the fame of the vintage; but I thought of an older, a newer, and purer wine, of a more glorious vintage, which they had not got, and could not buy. The style, the house and grounds and "entertainment" pass for nothing with me. I called on the king, but he made me wait in his hall, and conducted like a man incapacitated for hospitality. There was a man in my neighborhood who lived in a hollow tree. His manners were truly regal. I should have done better had I called on him.

Chief Joseph Hinmton Yalektit (Native American Leader: c. 1840—1904) fought and sought also independence’s truth:

“I have asked some of the great white chiefs where they get their authority to say to the Indian that he shall stay in one place, while he sees white men going where they please. They cannot tell me.

Moving north through the mountains of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, the Nez Percé under his leadership conducted one of the most brilliant retreats in American history. In three months this band of 700, with fewer than 200 warriors, traveled almost 1,500 miles while fighting off a pursuing army of 2,000.

Chief Joseph had been told that his people would be returned to their lands in Oregon, but instead they were transported to eastern Kansas, and then Oklahoma, where many died from epidemic diseases. He continued to protest their treatment, even traveling to Washington DCin 1879 to meet with President Hayes, but he and the Nez Percé were never permitted to return to their homeland. He died in northeastern Washington State in 1904, and was buried there in exile. https://www.americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/chief-joseph-hinmton-yalektit

Today’s truth is not and should not be different for people losing everything but truth to power.

“We the people” ("hold these truths to be"): losing power and independence but-not yet- truth.

CATRE TINE MEREU

estoy forzado a permanecer
tanto si huele a hierro
como si huele a heno

Y de una vez entiendo
que sufro en vano
sobre mis pilares sufrientes

Me abrazo y tiemblo
tú sientes lo que yo siento
más seriamente, sobre todo,
tu grito constante
tomo y escucho
y parece que le doy eco
y resuena de otra manera

Surcado por pies
como un hombre, como un puente
soy un puente sobre el río
Soy un puente sobre el río
soy un puente sobre el camino
cuántos vientos me han escrito
cuántas lluvias me han borrado
Pero  tú no estás en la orilla
no estás con ellos
no me derribas
me agarras y me bebes

Fernando Pessoa

Y Thoreau a Ricardo Reis:

"Para ser grande, sé entero:
nada tuyo exageres o excluyas.

Sé todo en cada cosa.Pon cuanto cuanto eres

(Alessamdro Baricco, The Game)

Serres has multiplied metaphors for this kind of passage between, or passage of, the hard and the soft. In 2006, for example, he published L’Art des ponts, a book in praise of bridges, which offers a physical scansion of the action of bridging, and the spanning of different kinds of bridge, it evokes

Method or hyphen, those are soft bridges;
viaduct or bridge, those are hard unions or methods.
Watch: I am constructing a new footbridge;
moving from matter to the sign and from the abstract
to the concrete, I am bridging the hard and the soft. Whether of one
or the other kind, I find bridges everywhere.
Examples: the method of translation mobilises two grammars
and a bilingual dictionary, it bridges languages;
the method
for producing
living mutation
moves through
genetic
manipulations;
it bridges
organisms
and soon species;
the method

for transmuting
elements passes
through radioactive
decay;
it bridges inert bodies.
Bridging, respectively, languages,
living beings and elements, we bridge, transversely,
the soft empire of signs with the hard realms of physics and biology…
First labour, to build bridges in the hard;
second work, to think of soft bridges. To launch oneself between
the second and the first, the final enterprise. Bridging, in general, becomes
an activity so large that it coincides perhaps with the whole human project, in that
our very body bridges flesh and word

Homo pontifex. (Serres 2006, 77)

This passage is set opposite a picture of a dividing prostate cancer cell with the two cells still joined by a cytoplasmic filament; Serres’s caption suggests that the image should remind us of the finger of God in Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel. Serres reminds us at the beginning of the book that Agen, his birthplace, is the site of a remarkable canal-bridge, part of the Canal des Deux Mers, which connects the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, and which crosses transversely over the river Garonne at Agen.

(Steven Connor: Michel Serres: The hard and the soft)

#DDAY75: HERE OR NOWHERE

The Truly Great

I think continually of those who were truly great.
Who, from the womb, remembered the soul’s history
Through corridors of light, where the hours are suns,
Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition
Was that their lips, still touched with fire,
Should tell of the Spirit, clothed from head to foot in song.
And who hoarded from the Spring branches
The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms.
What is precious, is never to forge
The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs
Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth.
Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light
Nor its grave evening demand for love.
Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother
With noise and fog, the flowering of the spirit.
Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields,
See how these names are fêted by the waving grass
And by the streamers of white cloud
And whispers of wind in the listening sky.
The names of those who in their lives fought for life,
Who wore at their hearts the fire’s centre.
Born of the sun, they travelled a short while toward the sun
And left the vivid air signed with their honour.

"Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother
With noise and fog, the flowering of the spirit."

Will we try to be able to sign affairs with the truly great honor through peace,
through thoughtfull and restless resistance to evil and crime from its very
beginning, through respect, care and help to all in need and, if necessary,
through forced coercion and self-defense baked by law and/or human
dignity?

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SOCIETY?
